Meet the crew
Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Murray de Bruyn, I am based in Johannesburg and part of the Business Development team at Cue.
Can you share the story behind the "Dibbs" nickname?
Nothing too exciting. A mate of mine came up with it because of my surname when I was about 6 or 7 years old. There were a few variations of it, but "Dibbs" stuck, and it's been that ever since.
You played professional rugby for 3 years, can you tell us about the journey?
I was given the opportunity to join the Lions in Johannesburg straight out of school, and as it neared the end of my contract with them, I made the decision to pursue a career outside of sport. Having said that, I loved my time there and met some amazing people during my time there.
How did you find your way to Cue?
I've known Ryan and Richie for a long time and followed the company's journey before it became Cue. From the "RnR Connect" days to Apex and then later Cue. After leaving my first job and on return from my travels, I reached out to them to see if there were any opportunities, and fortunately for me, there were. And as they say, the rest is history.
What do you do outside of work?
You'll either find me playing golf or more recently padel, and when time allows for it, I love to travel. If not one of those three, you will probably find me at my local spot watching whatever sport is on with mates.
What is your favourite travel destination and why?
That's a tough one, but I'd say Sri Lanka because of the people, food, and beaches. Locally, it would be St Francis. I've been going there since I was a kid. It's a home away from home.
What inspired you to pursue a career in Business Development?
I feel like it chose me rather than me choosing it. After various roles in different sectors, (which I all enjoyed), this opportunity with a “startup” presented itself. But since then, and what I enjoy the most, is that it has no boundaries, and allows you to work and collaborate with people from many companies, businesses, and positions..
How do you balance an active lifestyle with work?
Prioritising and planning, if you do that correctly, you'll always find time to do what you enjoy outside of work.
Pick any Arsenal player (past or present), who's joining you for dinner?
Ian Wright seems like a funny guy, so I'm sure that would be a good laugh.
You recently celebrated 5 years at Cue. What's it been like? What do you enjoy most about your job?
It's been nothing short of amazing, but what I have enjoyed most would be the people I've met along the way, both within and outside of the business. Here's to another 5!
What's the most rewarding part about your job?
It has no boundaries, and what you put in is what you get out. All while allowing you to work and collaborate with people from many industries, businesses, and positions.
Describe a typical day or week in your role
Meetings and demos with prospective clients, and finding new businesses, and people to reach out to, and meet with.
What challenges do you face in your role, and how do you overcome them?
Rejection has always been part of the game, particularly early on, but one needs to view these as learning opportunities and then analyse and evaluate them to improve.
What's one piece of advice you would give to someone looking to pursue a career in Business Development?
Be willing to constantly listen, learn and implement and the rewards can be great.
How do you see Cue's new AI solutions influencing your interactions with clients?
It's very exciting, and I see it increasing those interactions, it's been a hot topic for some time, and to have a product of this quality can only benefit Cue and its clients in the long run.
Can you share what it's like working between the sales and customer success crews at Cue?
Well, the short of it is, sales and customer success teams need to work together, as the best results cannot be achieved in silos. Fortunately, at Cue, this is what happens. We have two amazing teams with direct and open communication channels that allow us to achieve the end goal of converting a new client into a long-standing customer through our seamless handover processes and regular check-ins.
Describe the Cue culture in three words
Supportive, balanced and fun
